While middle schoolers are enjoying their last week of winter break, KGCI continues to push forward with the building addition…in spite of the cold temperatures.
The cold affects the planned concrete pours due to soil conditions. If concrete is poured over frozen, contracted soil, the concrete will crack when the soil thaws and expands.
To thaw the ground before pouring concrete, KGCI places heaters where the next slab is set to be poured.
Heat is piped to different parts of the ground to ensure consistent thawing.
Finally, concrete blankets are placed on the ground to prevent the heat from escaping. The ground should be thawed and ready for a slab pour on Friday, 1/4.
