Fruitgrowers Dam Outlet Gate Improvements

Scope

Kissner worked with Orchard City Irrigation District (Owner) and the Bureau of Reclamation (Engineer) as GC to remove and replace existing reservoir regulating and emergency valves with two 24″ triple offset butterfly valves and motorized actuators at Fruitgrowers Dam. While dewatering operations were in progress, Kissner removed the existing valves and pipe spool, along with all shaft components within the 50′-deep shaft.  Before dewatering operations could be suspended, the upstream emergency valve needed to be installed.

After emergency valve installation was complete, the existing pipe was sandblasted and painted, and the new shaft and actuator components were installed. This included a new platform landing, access ladders, chamber access shaft cover, actuator drive shafts — fabricated to span the 50′ depth — and safety line tower, as well as two IQ S12 Rotork Actuators.

Kissner constructed a new 10’x12′ building with rock veneer exterior over the existing access shaft and provided electrical service to include over 500′ of main powerline with poles to connect to the new electrical panel and fresh air ventilation system. Finally, Kissner removed and replaced the discharge structure and installed a motorized actuator there as well.

OCID added to the scope of work to include hydrovacing at the discharge structure, removing and replacing the existing 8″ drain gate, and excavation of pond sediment downstream from the reservoir to allow for greater water storage. Ground broke on the project in November 2023 and final site construction was complete in April 2024. Completion and major upgrades to the headworks ensures a more comfortable and safe work environment for all personnel and reduces irrigation waste by implementing an accurate water release system from the 3,740-acre foot reservoir by utilizing remote valve turning and control at each new valve and 24″ gate.
